CHICAGO – The Kelly High School debate team competed in the Chicago City Championships, held at Northwestern University and Loyola Law School on April 6 and 7, and received several honors at the tournament.
After several rounds and 20 hours of competition, Kelly High School took home several awards. Out of the 400 students from 40 schools, Kelly duo Mario Torres and Danny Tan emerged as one of the top ten debate teams and Adrian Medina was recognized as the fifth best individual speaker in the city.
On the novice level, the duos of Julian Rodriquez and Melissa Nava and Noel Padilla and Adrian Medina finished in the top ten. A very exciting honor went to novice due Eva Alcala and Yesenia Salgado, who made it to quarter final rounds in the tournament.
“The debate team would like to thank the students and staff of Kelly High School and all the residents of Brighton Park for their support in making this one of the best years in the long history of Kelly debate,” Coach Scott Dodsworth said.
The team and coach said the years’ season was special due to all community support.
